Lt. Col. Thomas A. Prince, retired Air Force, 83, of Frederick, formerly of Silver Spring, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
He was the husband of the late Janice E. Foreman Prince, his wife of 57 years. Born Sept. 14, 1919, in Greenville, S.C., he was the son of the late Theodore L. Prince Sr. and Charlestie E. Prince.
He worked in his father's ice and service station businesses until joining the Army Air Corps in 1941. During his military career, he served as aircraft commander in B-24s, B-29s, B-50s and B-47s and finally as director of safety for the HQ 310 Strategic Aerospace Wing (SAC) Schilling Air Force Base, Kansas.
He retired from the Air Force in 1965 and started a second career with the Federal Aviation Administration as flight safety officer for the American SST program and as chief, aircraft management branch, in Hawaii. He retired from the FAA in 1978.
He was a Methodist and had been a member of the Greenville Masons since 1947.
While growing up in Greenville, he could frequently be heard on the radio singing with a barbershop quartet.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas A. Prince and wife Nancy of Orlando, Fla., and Theodore C. Prince of Leesburg, Va.; two daughters, Patricia D. Taliaferro and husband Craig, and Shelley J. Prince of Frederick; one sister, Stella Wall of Pelzer, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Fort Myers Chapel in Arlington National Cemetery.
